His Name Is Not Harry

A few months ago – August, I think – I got a call from David Callaghan, new to the Express & Star, Wolverhampton’s local newspaper. He was writing a feature article on craft beer in the UK and wanted to interview me. I invited him over on a brew day and he took notes and asked questions over a period of at least three hours. I was impressed. Most “journalists” these days copy and past entire press releases or web page content and call it an article, but David was actually asking questions. Cool.

The article finally got published in last night’s edition of the paper, but before I got out of the Brew Studio to pick up a copy, I was already getting teased about “Harry.” “Would love to meet this Harry Weaver,” wrote my mother-in-law in a Facebook post. Huh?

David mentions how my husband and I met at an Alice Donut concert in Brooklyn. Harry Weaver, my husband. I don’t know where that came from, because “Mark” doesn’t sound anything like Harry. You know I’m going to call him Harry from now on, right?

Details aside, it’s a pretty cool center spread in “the biggest-selling regional evening newspaper in Britain,” according to the Express & Star. For me, it’s the local paper, and it’s great to finally get acknowledged as a member of the community by it, as well as having the great exposure. So thank you, David!

Another exciting instance of media coverage on the same day was on The Guardian‘s web site. Kitty Dann and Arun Marsh visited me in September to interview me about brewery operations, mainly how it got started and what it takes to run it. Inclusion as a craft brewer in coverage by the Express & Star and The Guardian brings Sacre Brew to a new level of legitimacy, so it’s thrilling and gratifying to be able to capture the attention of these journalists. I believe that if you’re serious about what you do – whatever it is that you do – and keep trying to improve your skills and be the best you can be, people will start to pay attention.
